Her stage name was Sulli, but she was born Choi Jin-Ri, in South Korea, and her dream was to be an actress and singer. Her birth name meant “truth,” and her stage name meant “pear blossoms in the snow.”
Her star rose quickly, first as an actress, and then in 2009 as a member of a K-Pop girl group. This group was internationally successful with Sulli achieving prominence. At the same time, her acting career was sky-rocketing. This fame led to modelling campaigns, including becoming a global brand ambassador for Estee Lauder.
Sulli was recognized as a prominent figure in Korean popular culture for her outspoken persona, becoming the most Googled person in South Korea in 2017.
Throughout her career, Sulli received much attention for her unconventional persona, which polarized public perception. Some members of the media branded her as “eccentric” and “forward-thinking,” while conservative media outlets considered her to be “inappropriate” and “absurd.”
Sulli, spoke out loudly against cyberbullying, which affected her personally as she was often the target of online abuse. She expressed her hope that people could accept each other’s differences, and said, “there are so many unique types of people in this country, with so much talent, and I feel like they’re wasting it by putting their energy into critiquing others like this online.”
In 2018, Sulli told the world that she was struggling with panic disorder and social phobia that was magnified by intense cyber-bullying. She became very depressed, and she was overwhelmed. She committed suicide.
Everyone was heart-broken. Sulli, so young, sensitive and talented……gone to the stars but not forgotten.
