Yvette Mimieux was an American film and television actress. Her breakout role was in The Time Machine (1960). She was nominated for three Golden Globe Awards during her acting career.
Yvette Mimieux was discovered as a teenager by a Hollywood publicist, Jim Byron. He told the story in a syndicated Associated Press article, claiming that he was in a helicopter when he spotted her horseback riding with a friend. The way he remembered it, he landed and gave her his card.
She often played fragile, ethereal characters. She described herself this way, "I suppose I have a soulful quality. I was often cast as a wounded person, the 'sensitive' role.”
The best example of this is when Yvette Mimieux guest-starred on two episodes of Dr. Kildare alongside Richard Chamberlain. She played a surfer suffering from epilepsy, a performance that was much acclaimed and led to a 1965 Golden Globe nomination for "Best Actress in A Television Series.”
A reporter once described her in this way:
“She occupies some vague region far west of Bardot,” referring to France’s most famous sex symbol, Brigitte Bardot, “and just east of Tuesday Weld.”
When not acting, Yvette Mimieux took archaeology classes, founded a business based on Haitian folk art, traveled as far afield as Easter Island, dabbled in real estate, and dabbled as an artist painting large, colorful canvases.
The soft, sweet beauty of Yvette Mimieux will always be In Heaven with the Stars.
