David Bowie was an English singer-songwriter and actor. A leading figure in the music industry, he is regarded as one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century.
David Bowie was acclaimed by critics and musicians, particularly for his innovative work during the 1970s. His career was marked by reinvention and visual presentation, and his music and stagecraft had a significant impact on popular music.
He formed his first band, the Konrads, in 1962 at the age of 15. Playing guitar-based rock and roll at local youth gatherings and weddings, the Konrads had a varying line-up of between four and eight members. The following year he left the technical school his parent’s enrolled him in and announced his intention to become a pop star.
The artist's hits include Let's Dance, Changes, Space Oddity, Starman, Modern Love, Heroes, Under Pressure, Rebel Rebel, and Life on Mars.
He was also well known for creating his flamboyant alter ego Ziggy Stardust.
David Bowie was creating music until the very end of his life. The singer, who had been living in New York, released his last album Blackstar on his 69th birthday, two days before his death from liver cancer.
While always primarily a musician, David Bowie took acting roles throughout his career, appearing in over 30 films, television shows, and theatrical productions. However, he was very selective on the roles he chose.
He was also a painter and artist. He moved to Switzerland in 1976, purchasing a chalet in the hills to the north of Lake Geneva. In the new environment, his cocaine use decreased and he found time for other pursuits outside his musical career. He devoted more time to his painting, and produced a number of post-modernist pieces. When on tour, he took to sketching in a notebook, and photographing scenes for later reference.
It was said, "His death was no different from his life - a work of art. He was an extraordinary man, full of love and life. He always did what he wanted to do. And he wanted to do it his way and he wanted to do it the best way. He will always be with us."
David Bowie was both a star and an icon — and because he had succeeded in so many different styles of music, it is almost impossible to find a popular artist today that has not been influenced by his work.
David Bowie will live on in his music and artistry. He will forever be “In Heaven with the Stars.”
