Oksana Baulina was a Russian journalist killed in Kyiv while working for the Russian investigative outfit The Insider. She died in a Russian mortar strike on a Ukrainian shopping center during the 2022 Russian Invasion of Ukraine.
Oksana Baulina, once a fashion editor at Time Out Moscow, became an activist with Alexei Navalny's Anti-Corruption Foundation in 2016. She emigrated to Poland shortly before the organization was branded extremist by the Russian government.
Before the invasion, she was based in Warsaw, and during the invasion had reported from Kyiv and Lviv. Her final work included interviews with Russian prisoners of war, whom she allowed to call home using her cell phone.
“The Insider expresses its deepest condolences to Oksana’s family and friends,” it said, adding that it will continue to cover the war in Ukraine, “including such Russian war crimes as indiscriminate shelling of residential areas killing civilians and journalists.”
One of her friends explained, “She was forced out of Russia. She had to leave the country in the summer of 2020, amid the pandemic. There was a high chance an extremism case could be opened against her. The border was almost completely closed at the time, so she had to cross it by foot, dragging her suitcases along.”
Oksana Baulina, a Russian, who believed in reporting the truth about the atrocities that Russians were inflicting on ordinary Ukrainians, will never be forgotten as she becomes part of “In Heaven with the Stars.”
